Mitti Studio
Interiors drawn from the ground up — for houses, villas and rooms that are meant to be lived in slowly.
The practice
We begin with theground, never thecatalogue.
Mitti Studio takes on four or five interiors a year. Each one begins from the particulars of its site — the direction the light arrives from, the stone that is quarried nearby, the way a family or a room full of guests will actually move through the space. Nothing is adapted from a previous brief.
What follows is unhurried. Plaster is mixed and tested on site. Joinery is drawn full size before it is built. Lighting is set after dark, circuit by circuit, with the client present. We would rather a room felt inevitable than impressive.

A coastal house furnished only in what can be mended locally.

Eight rooms, each built from one material found within forty kilometres.
Material language
Earth, worked by peoplewe know by name.
Indian craft traditions handled with a modernist eye. The studio keeps a deliberately short list of materials and knows each one intimately — where it comes from, who works it, and how it behaves once a room has been lived in for a decade.
Lime plaster
Mixed and burnished on site
Takes fingerprints for its first month, then stops. Every wall carries the hand that applied it.
Stone
Dholpur, Kota, Makrana
Quarried within the state wherever possible, and marked in chalk at the quarry rather than chosen from a sample chip.
Aged brass
Cast in Jaipur
Left unlacquered on anything a hand will touch daily. It is specified for how it will look in four years, not on handover.
Reclaimed teak
Salvaged, Kerala
Almost always salvaged. New teak has no history to offer, and takes forty years to earn any.
How we work
Four stages, never rushed.

Consultation
An unhurried first conversation, in the space if we can. We want to know how you actually use it, at what hours, and what about it currently defeats you. No proposal yet, and no obligation.

Concept
We return with one direction — a plan, a palette, and a tray of real material samples you can handle. Not three options to choose between. One idea, developed for your space, and argued for properly.

Design & detailing
Joinery drawn full size. Fabrics left in the room for a fortnight before they are confirmed. Lighting set after dark, circuit by circuit, with you present. This stage takes the longest, deliberately.

Delivery
We are on site through the build rather than only at handover, and we place the last pieces ourselves — down to the height of a reading lamp and the depth a chair sits from the wall.
We do not decorate rooms.We compose the waylight moves through them.
