Nilgiri Retreat

The property sits in a working tea estate, and the owners were clear that they did not want a hotel that could have been anywhere. The obvious answer — local motifs applied as decoration — was the one thing we were not prepared to do.

Instead each of the eight guest rooms is built around a single material sourced within forty kilometres: stone in one, timber in another, handloom cotton in a third. No room repeats another. Guests who return ask for a different one each time, which was the entire point.

The rooms are furnished sparely enough that whatever a guest sets down becomes the most interesting thing in the room. That is not minimalism for its own sake — it is what makes a room feel like yours by the second evening.
