Mitti Studio

Philosophy

A room should feelinevitable, not impressive.

Mitti Studio was founded in Jaipur in 2013 on a straightforward premise: that the interiors worth making are the ones drawn from where they stand. Not regional pastiche, and not the international neutral that could be dropped into any city on earth — but rooms that could only have been made here, from what is here.

In practice that means a great deal of time spent away from the drawing board. At quarries, marking blocks in chalk before the midday glare washes them flat. In weaving workshops in Bhuj and Sirsi. On site at seven in the morning, watching where the light actually lands rather than where the drawings said it would.

We remain three people by choice. It means we say no more often than we would like, and it means every decision on every project passes through the same pair of hands. We have never taken on more than five interiors in a year, and we do not intend to.

The practice — three people

Ananya Rao

Founder, Principal Designer

Trained at CEPT and spent four years at a large Mumbai practice before leaving to start Mitti in 2013. Still hand-draws every plan before it touches a computer, and still goes to the quarry herself.

Farhan Sheikh

Senior Designer — Joinery & Detailing

Came to interiors from furniture making, which shows in the drawings. Has personally sat in every chair the studio has ever specified, and rejected rather more than he has approved.

Studio Manager & Client Liaison

Holds the schedule, the budgets and the relationships with every workshop the studio depends on. The person who actually replies when you write to the studio.
